The FDA has been notified of a Salmonella outbreak across the United States in relation to Mexican papayas. The Mexican Maradol papaya recall has thus far been limited to those papayas of the Caribeña brand. Maradol papayas are green before they ripen and turn yellow, so consumers should not eat Caribeña brand regardless of the color. The states currently involved are IA, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, NJ, NY, PA, TX, UT and VA. Other states may also be affected. Other brands may also be affected, though Caribeña is the only brand connected thus far.
For more information, check here and here. As this Salmonella outbreak has proven fatal in at least one case, I do not suggest eating these papaya.
